Which club won the 2019 AFL premiership by defeating Greater Western Sydney in the Grand Final?

The story behind the answer

Richmond won the 2019 AFL premiership by defeating Greater Western Sydney in the Grand Final.

The match was played on 28 September 2019 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Richmond won by 89 points, scoring 17.12 (114) to Greater Western Sydney’s 3.7 (25). The result gave Richmond its 12th VFL/AFL premiership and its second championship in three seasons.

Richmond entered the match as the reigning premiers, having won the 2017 Grand Final. Greater Western Sydney, established as an AFL club in 2012, was appearing in its first men’s AFL Grand Final. Richmond’s strong pressure and contested play produced a decisive lead early, and the Tigers controlled the match through the later quarters.

The Norm Smith Medal for the best player on the ground went to Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin. This was Richmond’s third premiership of the 2010s, following its 2017 and 2019 successes; the club also won the 2020 premiership the next year. The match is sometimes described as Richmond’s second consecutive premiership, although the club did not play in the 2018 Grand Final.
