Which club won the 2016 AFL premiership, ending a 62-year championship drought?

The story behind the answer

The Western Bulldogs won the 2016 AFL premiership, ending a 62-year championship drought.

The Bulldogs defeated the Sydney Swans by 22 points in the 2016 AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The final score was Western Bulldogs 13.11 (89) to Sydney 8.15 (63). It was the club’s second VFL/AFL premiership and its first since 1954.

The victory was especially notable because the Bulldogs finished the 2016 home-and-away season in seventh place. They became the first team to win the modern AFL premiership from outside the top four since the finals system was expanded. Their finals campaign included away wins over West Coast, Hawthorn and Greater Western Sydney before the Grand Final.

The club was known as Footscray until 1996, when it adopted the Western Bulldogs name. The 2016 triumph is sometimes confused with the club’s 1954 premiership, but these remain its only two senior VFL/AFL flags.
