Which club won the 2005 AFL premiership, its first since relocating from South Melbourne?

The story behind the answer

The Sydney Swans won the 2005 AFL premiership, their first since relocating from South Melbourne.

Sydney defeated the West Coast Eagles by four points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, winning 8.10 (58) to 7.12 (54). The close contest was the first AFL Grand Final between two non-Victorian clubs.

The premiership ended a 72-year drought for the club, whose previous VFL title had come as South Melbourne in 1933. It was also Sydney’s first premiership since the club moved north in 1982.

Jude Bolton led Sydney’s midfield effort, while Leo Barry’s famous late defensive mark became one of the match’s defining images. Chris Judd won the Norm Smith Medal for West Coast despite his team’s defeat.
