Hawthorn won the 1989 VFL premiership by defeating Geelong in the Grand Final.
Hawthorn beat Geelong by six points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, winning 21.18 (144) to 21.12 (138). The match is widely regarded as one of the most dramatic and physically intense grand finals in VFL history.
Hawthorn forward Jason Dunstall kicked eight goals, while Geelong captain Gary Ablett Sr kicked nine. Despite Ablett’s record-setting total, Hawthorn held on for victory in a tense finish.
The premiership was Hawthorn’s eighth VFL flag and its fourth in the 1980s. The club’s success under coach Alan Joyce helped establish Hawthorn as the dominant Victorian team of that decade.
