Which club was the first non-Victorian team to win an AFL premiership?
Answer
West Coast Eagles
Answer
West Coast Eagles
The West Coast Eagles were the first non-Victorian club to win an AFL premiership, taking the 1992 flag.
West Coast defeated Geelong by 28 points in the 1992 AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Eagles’ victory was historically significant because it made them the first club from outside Victoria to win the competition’s premiership. They followed that success with another premiership in 1994.
The club entered the competition in 1987 as one of the league’s first expansion teams beyond Victoria. Its arrival helped transform the former VFL into a genuinely national competition, alongside the Brisbane Bears. West Coast represented Western Australia, where the sport already had a strong football culture and established state competitions.
The Brisbane Lions later became the first non-Victorian club to win three consecutive premierships, from 2001 through 2003. That achievement is different from West Coast’s earlier distinction as the first interstate premiership winner.
