Which club was the first from outside Victoria to win a VFL/AFL premiership?
Answer
West Coast Eagles
Answer
West Coast Eagles
West Coast was the first club from outside Victoria to win a VFL/AFL premiership.
The West Coast Eagles achieved the milestone in 1992 by defeating Geelong in the Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Eagles won by 28 points, becoming the first non-Victorian club to claim the competition's premiership.
Peter Matera won the Norm Smith Medal after a remarkable performance, including five goals from the wing. West Coast's success demonstrated that the increasingly national competition could be won by a club based outside the traditional Victorian heartland.
The Eagles had entered the VFL in 1987 as the competition's first Western Australian team. Their 1992 victory came only five seasons after entry and was followed by another premiership in 1994.
