Budapest withdrew from the bidding before Birmingham was awarded the 2026 European Athletics Championships.
The European Athletic Association selected Birmingham at a council meeting in Warsaw, Poland, on 11 November 2022. The decision followed Budapest’s withdrawal, leaving the British city as the successful candidate for the senior outdoor championships.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary and has hosted major international athletics events, including the 2023 World Athletics Championships. Its withdrawal meant that Birmingham became the host city for the 2026 continental competition.
Warsaw can be confused with the answer because it was the location of the council meeting where the decision was made. Rome was the previous European Athletics Championships host in 2024, while Chorzów is scheduled to host the next edition in 2028. None of those cities was the withdrawn 2026 bidder.
