J.K. Rowling was living in Edinburgh when she completed Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She moved to the Scottish capital in the early 1990s and wrote parts of the first novel there.
Rowling had begun developing the Harry Potter idea before settling in Edinburgh. After periods in Portugal and England, she became a single mother and worked on the manuscript while caring for her daughter. Edinburgh provided the setting for an important stage of the book’s completion and early revision.
Cafés in Edinburgh are often linked with stories about her writing, especially Nicolson’s Café and The Elephant House. These associations have become part of the city’s literary-tourism history, but the novel was not written entirely in one café. Rowling wrote in multiple places and at home.
Edinburgh is also distinct from the fictional locations in the series. Hogwarts is not a real school hidden in Scotland, even though Scottish landscapes and architecture are frequently associated with the films and the broader wizarding world.
