Sucre is the constitutional capital of the landlocked country Bolivia.
Bolivia’s constitution designates Sucre as the national capital. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1538 as Ciudad de la Plata and later became an important centre of the independence movement. It was renamed Sucre in honour of Antonio José de Sucre, a leading figure in South American independence.
La Paz is Bolivia’s administrative capital and the seat of the executive and legislative branches. This division is why many references call La Paz the capital in everyday usage, even though Sucre holds the constitutional designation. Bolivia’s Supreme Court is based in Sucre.
The city’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bolivia is also notable geographically for sharing Lake Titicaca with Peru, the world’s highest navigable lake for large vessels.
