Which city is strongly associated with J.K. Rowling’s writing of Harry Potter?

The story behind the answer

Edinburgh is strongly associated with J.K. Rowling’s writing of Harry Potter.

Rowling lived in Edinburgh while writing parts of the series, and local places became linked with the books in public memory. She wrote in cafés including Nicolson’s Café and later the Elephant House, although the claim that the entire series was written in one particular café is an oversimplification.

Edinburgh’s old architecture, graveyards, and winding streets have often been discussed alongside the atmosphere of the wizarding world. Greyfriars Kirkyard, for example, contains gravestones whose names resemble names used in the novels, including Thomas Riddell. Similarities do not prove that every setting or character came directly from one location.

The books were not written exclusively in Edinburgh. Rowling also wrote in other places, including Portugal and England, and the series developed over many years rather than in a single café.
