Which city is generally regarded as the birthplace of Australian rules football?

The story behind the answer

Melbourne is generally regarded as the birthplace of Australian rules football.

The code developed in Melbourne during the late 1850s, when local clubs and schools organized football matches suited to the city’s conditions. The Melbourne Football Club, founded in 1858, played a major role in establishing the game and producing early written rules in 1859.

Melbourne’s parks, schools and clubs helped the sport spread throughout Victoria. The city also became the administrative centre of the Victorian Football League, founded in 1896, and remains home to several major clubs and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, one of the sport’s most important venues.

Australian football later expanded across the country and developed strong traditions in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales. Those regions have their own influential histories, but Melbourne is the standard answer for the code’s birthplace.
