Which city hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games held in Russia?

The story behind the answer

Sochi hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games held in Russia.

The Games took place from 7 to 23 February 2014 in and around Sochi, a Black Sea resort city. Alpine events were held in the nearby Caucasus mountains at Krasnaya Polyana, while ice events took place in coastal Olympic Park.

Sochi was also the first Russian city to host a Winter Olympics. Moscow had hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics, but no Russian city had previously staged the Winter edition. The 2014 Games were followed by the 2014 Winter Paralympics.

A common mix-up is confusing Sochi with Moscow because both cities hosted Olympic Games for Russia or the Soviet Union. Moscow hosted the Summer Games in 1980; Sochi hosted the Winter Games in 2014.
