Which city hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, held in British Columbia, Canada?

The story behind the answer

Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, held in British Columbia, Canada.

The Games took place from 12 to 28 February 2010, with Vancouver serving as the main host city. Several outdoor events, including alpine skiing, were staged at Whistler, a mountain resort north of Vancouver. Richmond hosted the speed-skating oval, while other venues were spread across the region.

These Olympics were the third Winter Games held in Canada, after Calgary 1988 and Montreal 1976, although Montreal hosted the Summer Olympics. Vancouver 2010 was also the first Olympics held in Canada to produce a Canadian overall medal-winning performance at a home Games, with Canada topping the gold-medal table.

A common mix-up is to name Whistler as the host city. Whistler was a major competition site, but Vancouver was the official host city and gave the Games their name. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at BC Place in Vancouver.
