Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, including Steven Bradbury's unexpected short-track speed-skating victory.
The Games took place in Utah, United States, from February 8 to February 24, 2002. Events were held in Salt Lake City and nearby venues, including the ice rink where Australian skater Steven Bradbury won the men's 1,000 metres.
Bradbury was trailing in the final when the other four competitors crashed on the last turn. He stayed upright and crossed the finish line first, producing one of the most improbable Olympic victories ever. His story later gave rise to the expression “doing a Bradbury” in Australian English.
Salt Lake City had originally been selected to host the 1998 Games but lost that vote to Nagano. The city was awarded the 2002 Games in 1995. These Olympics also featured the first use of the current Olympic cauldron design associated with a large central arch.
