London hosted the 1997 publication of J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel.
Bloomsbury published Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. Bloomsbury is a London-based publishing house, and the book’s British publication launched the series that would become one of the best-selling literary franchises in history.
The first edition was relatively small compared with the later scale of the series. The book soon attracted attention through children’s-book awards and enthusiastic word of mouth. Scholastic published the American edition in 1998 under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
London is the publication city, not the city that inspired much of Rowling’s writing. Edinburgh is strongly associated with her writing life, but it is not the answer to this publication question. The novel introduced Harry, Hogwarts, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the central magical world.
