Lillehammer hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics, remembered for the rivalry between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding.
The Norwegian city held the Games from 12 to 27 February 1994. The women's figure-skating competition drew exceptional attention after Kerrigan was attacked in January, an incident connected to people associated with Harding's former husband.
Kerrigan recovered and won the silver medal in Lillehammer, while Ukraine's Oksana Baiul won gold. Harding finished eighth. The event became one of the most heavily covered stories in Olympic history, extending far beyond the sport itself.
Lillehammer also marked the first Winter Olympics held in a different year from the preceding Summer Olympics, following the Olympic calendar change. Before 1994, Summer and Winter Games were generally held in the same year.
