Which city hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics, the last Winter Games held in the same year as the Summer Games?

The story behind the answer

Albertville hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics, the last Winter Games held in the same year as the Summer Games.

The Albertville Games took place in the French Alps from 8 to 23 February 1992. They were the final Winter Olympics scheduled in the same calendar year as the Summer Olympics, which were held later in Barcelona.

After 1992, the International Olympic Committee separated the two festivals into different two-year cycles. The next Winter Olympics were held in Lillehammer in 1994, only two years after Albertville. This change allowed major Olympic events to receive their own global spotlight.

Although Albertville was the official host city, several events were staged in surrounding Alpine communities. The Games also marked the final appearance of unified teams from several former Soviet republics, which competed together as the Unified Team.
