Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games to feature a team ski-jumping event.
The team event took place on the large hill at Canada Olympic Park. Each nation entered four ski jumpers, and the team score combined the points from all four jumps. Finland won the inaugural Olympic team competition, ahead of Yugoslavia and Norway.
Calgary 1988 was also notable for its extensive use of purpose-built venues and for events held in the nearby mountain communities of Canmore and Nakiska. The Games ran from 13 to 28 February 1988.
The team event differed from the individual normal-hill and large-hill competitions, where athletes competed for themselves. Ski jumping’s team format remained on the Olympic programme after Calgary. The phrase “team ski jumping” can also refer to later mixed or youth competitions, but the first Olympic team event was the men’s team competition in Calgary.
