Which city hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics famous for the Miracle on Ice?

The story behind the answer

Lake Placid hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics, including the famous Miracle on Ice hockey game.

The Games were held in the New York village from 13 to 24 February 1980. Lake Placid had already hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932, making it the first location to stage the event twice.

In the most celebrated hockey match, the United States team defeated the Soviet Union 4–3 in the medal-round semifinal. The American team, made largely of college players, then beat Finland to win the gold medal. The semifinal victory became known as the Miracle on Ice.

The United States did not win every major hockey game at the tournament: it lost to the Soviet Union in an earlier group-stage match. The 1980 Games also introduced artificial snowmaking on a large scale and featured Eric Heiden’s five speed-skating gold medals.
