Which Chevrolet sports car received the ZR-1 designation for its 1990 model-year debut?

The story behind the answer

The Chevrolet Corvette received the ZR-1 designation for its 1990 model-year debut.

The C4-generation Corvette ZR-1 was developed as a high-performance flagship. Its defining engine was the LT5, a 5.7-liter, 32-valve, double-overhead-camshaft V8 developed with assistance from Lotus and built by Mercury Marine.

The ZR-1 combined the advanced engine with wider bodywork, upgraded suspension, and larger tires. It was substantially more expensive than a standard Corvette and was intended to challenge high-performance sports cars from Europe and Japan.

The model is often called the “King of the Hill,” a nickname associated with its performance reputation. It should not be confused with later Corvette ZR1 versions, including the C6 ZR1 introduced for 2009. Chevrolet has reused the designation across Corvette generations.
