What type of vessel inspired the name of the Chevrolet Corvette?

The story behind the answer

The Chevrolet Corvette's name was inspired by a small warship.

The term “corvette” traditionally refers to a small, fast naval vessel. Chevrolet chose the name for its new two-seat sports car, which debuted in 1953 as a low-volume model intended to give the brand an American rival to European sports cars.

The first Corvette was built with a fiberglass body and used Chevrolet's existing Blue Flame six-cylinder engine. It was assembled in Flint, Michigan, before production moved to the St. Louis plant and later to Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The nautical name helped convey speed and agility, but the Corvette was not named after a specific ship. This is why answers such as “destroyer” or “submarine” are incorrect: those are different vessel categories. The name has remained with Chevrolet's flagship sports car through every generation.
