What does the “SSR” in Chevrolet SSR stand for?

The story behind the answer

“SSR” in Chevrolet SSR stands for Super Sport Roadster.

Chevrolet used the name for a retro-styled vehicle with a retractable hardtop and an open pickup bed. The SSR combined cues from classic Chevrolet trucks with modern sports-car equipment, making it unusual even among specialty vehicles.

The production SSR was based on the Chevrolet TrailBlazer's GMT360 platform and used rear-wheel drive. It entered production for the 2003 model year and was sold through 2006. Early examples used a 5.3-liter V8, while later models received the more powerful 6.0-liter LS2 V8.

The name is easy to misread as a reference to a racing category or a conventional pickup trim. In Chevrolet's terminology, however, “Super Sport Roadster” directly describes the vehicle's intended blend of performance styling and open-bed utility.
