The Chevrolet Citation debuted for the 1980 model year.
Chevrolet introduced the Citation as a front-wheel-drive compact car built on General Motors' X-body platform. It was offered in hatchback and notchback forms and was positioned as a modern, space-efficient replacement within Chevrolet's compact lineup.
The Citation became an immediate sales success. Its front-wheel-drive layout provided a relatively roomy cabin for the car's exterior size, an increasingly important advantage during an era of high fuel prices and changing consumer preferences.
The model is sometimes confused with later Chevrolet compacts such as the Cavalier, but the Citation came first. Production continued through the 1985 model year. Despite strong early sales, criticism of quality, recalls, and safety issues contributed to the model's later decline.
