The Chevrolet C/K pickup received the Silverado name for the 1999 model year.
Chevrolet used Silverado as a trim and model designation before it became the principal name of the company’s full-size pickup. For 1999, the new GMT800 generation replaced the previous C/K line and was marketed as the Chevrolet Silverado. The closely related GMC version was called the Sierra.
The new Silverado offered regular-cab, extended-cab, and later crew-cab configurations, with two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions. It used a new frame and updated V8 engines, including the small-block-based Vortec family. Chevrolet continued to use Silverado names across 1500, 2500, and 3500 models.
The C/K name had a long history, beginning in the 1960s. In Chevrolet terminology, C generally indicated two-wheel drive and K indicated four-wheel drive. The Silverado did not represent a minor trim change; it marked the transition to a new full-size pickup generation and a new primary name.
