Comic Relief received proceeds from J.K. Rowling’s 2001 book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The book was presented as a Hogwarts textbook by Newt Scamander and published alongside Quidditch Through the Ages. Both short companion books were sold to raise money for Comic Relief, the British charity known for combining comedy and fundraising campaigns.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them includes an introduction by Albus Dumbledore and handwritten-style notes attributed to Harry Potter and his friends. Although it is fictionalized as a school textbook, its charitable publication was a real-world fundraising project.
This donation is distinct from Rowling’s later establishment of the Volant Charitable Trust and from her involvement with Lumos. Readers can also confuse the 2001 companion book with the later film franchise, which began in 2016 and has a different format and narrative focus.
