J.K. Rowling established Lumos to support disadvantaged children.
Lumos is an international charity founded by Rowling in 2005. It originally operated under the name Children’s High Level Group before becoming Lumos in 2010. The organization works to end the institutionalization of children and promote family- and community-based care.
Its name refers to the lighting spell “Lumos” in the Harry Potter books. The charity’s work addresses children living in orphanages and other large institutions, including children separated from families because of poverty, disability, or inadequate social support.
Lumos is distinct from Comic Relief, BBC Children in Need, and Save the Children, which are separate organizations. Rowling’s charitable activity also includes support for multiple sclerosis research and other causes, but Lumos is the organization most directly associated with her work on children’s care.
