Which character is the magical zoologist at the center of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts films?

The story behind the answer

Newt Scamander is the magical zoologist at the center of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts films.

Newt is introduced as a magizoologist, a specialist in magical creatures, who travels with a case containing extraordinary animals. The first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, follows his visit to New York in 1926 and the chaos that follows when some creatures escape.

Newt’s name first appears in the Harry Potter series as the credited author of the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Rowling later wrote the screenplay for the film series, turning that fictional textbook author into its protagonist. Newt is sometimes confused with Theseus Scamander, his older brother, who is an accomplished British Auror and a different character.
