Which character is the central detective in J.K. Rowling’s Cormoran Strike novels?

The story behind the answer

Cormoran Strike is the central detective in J.K. Rowling’s Cormoran Strike novels. He is a private investigator and former military investigator who operates in London.

The character first appears in The Cuckoo’s Calling, published in 2013 under the author name Robert Galbraith. Strike is a former Royal Military Police special investigations officer who lost part of his leg in Afghanistan. He opens a private detective agency and takes difficult cases.

Robin Ellacott becomes his temporary secretary at the beginning of the series and develops into his trusted investigative partner. Their professional relationship is a major continuing thread, alongside the individual mysteries in each book.

The novels are crime fiction rather than fantasy. They include The Silkworm, Career of Evil, Lethal White, Troubled Blood, The Ink Black Heart and The Running Grave. Television adaptations of the books have been broadcast as Strike, with Tom Burke playing Strike.
