Wunmi Mosaku played Annie in Sinners and won the 2026 BAFTA for Supporting Actress.
Sinners is a period horror film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Set in 1932 Mississippi, it follows twin brothers who return to their community and open a juke joint, only to face a supernatural threat. Annie is a rootworker and spiritual figure whose knowledge and courage become crucial as the group confronts the vampires.
The role is easy to confuse with other memorable women in the film, particularly Mary, played by Hailee Steinfeld, or Grace, played by Jack O’Connell in a dual role. Annie’s importance comes not simply from exposition: her spiritual practice, community ties and willingness to fight give the characters practical protection and moral direction. Mosaku’s BAFTA was part of Sinners’ strong showing, alongside wins for Original Screenplay and Musical Score.
