The Thai cave that became the site of the 2018 youth soccer team rescue was Tham Luang, formally Tham Luang Nang Non. It is a cave system in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand.
On 23 June 2018, 12 boys from the Wild Boars junior football team and their 25-year-old assistant coach entered the cave after practice. Heavy monsoon rain caused flooding, blocking their route out and trapping them deep inside. Divers found the group alive on 2 July, more than a week after they disappeared.
An international rescue operation brought all 12 boys and their coach out between 8 and 10 July. The extraction involved Thai and international cave divers, medical specialists, soldiers, police, volunteers and extensive pumping operations. The passages included submerged sections with strong currents, darkness and extremely narrow gaps.
The name is sometimes shortened to Tham Luang, but Tham Luang Nang Non identifies the specific cave complex. Erawan caves, Phang Nga Bay cave and Phraya Nakhon are unrelated Thai cave attractions.
