Which British cavalry regiment captured the eagle of the French 45e Ligne?
Answer
Scots Greys
Answer
Scots Greys
The Scots Greys captured the eagle of the French 45e Ligne at Waterloo. The regiment’s formal name was the 2nd (Royal North British) Dragoons, commonly known as the Royal Scots Greys, and it formed part of the British Union Brigade.
During the great British heavy-cavalry charge, the Union Brigade attacked French infantry that had advanced across the sunken road near La Haye Sainte. The Scots Greys reached the 45e Ligne as it was reforming and pursuing Allied infantry. In the ensuing melee, Sergeant Charles Ewart seized the regiment’s Imperial Eagle and standard.
The event is often mixed up with the capture of another French eagle that day. Captain Alexander Kennedy Clark of the 1st Royal Dragoons captured the eagle of the 105e Ligne, while Ewart and the Scots Greys took the 45e Ligne’s eagle. These were the only two French eagles captured by British troops at Waterloo. The trophy is associated today with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
