Near which Belgian town did the Battle of Waterloo take place?

The Battle of Waterloo took place near the Belgian town of Waterloo. The battle was fought on 18 June 1815, south of Brussels, during Napoleon’s Hundred Days.

The name can be slightly misleading geographically. Much of the battlefield lay in the territory of present-day Braine-l’Alleud and nearby municipalities, while Wellington’s headquarters and the place from which he issued his victory report were at Waterloo. That report helped establish “Waterloo” as the battle’s familiar name.

The battlefield centred on positions around Mont-Saint-Jean, La Haye Sainte and Hougoumont. In France, the engagement was sometimes called the Battle of Mont-Saint-Jean, while German usage historically included “Belle-Alliance.” Nevertheless, Waterloo became the standard English name and the one used in the question.
