Which Hanoverian officer commanded the King's German Legion troops at La Haye Sainte?

The story behind the answer

Georg Baring commanded the King's German Legion troops defending La Haye Sainte at the Battle of Waterloo.

Baring led the Legion's 2nd Light Infantry Battalion, a Hanoverian formation serving in the British army. La Haye Sainte was a fortified farmhouse positioned in front of Wellington's central line, making it a crucial advanced post during the battle on 18 June 1815.

The defenders resisted repeated French attacks, but ammunition shortages and mounting casualties eventually forced them to abandon the position. Baring later reported that only 42 of the roughly 400 men with whom he began the battle remained. His defence helped delay French operations and made him one of Waterloo's notable German commanders.

A common mix-up is to associate La Haye Sainte with Hougoumont, another famous fortified position at Waterloo. Hougoumont was defended mainly by British and allied Guards, while La Haye Sainte was held by the King's German Legion. Baring continued his military career in the restored Hanoverian army after the Legion was dissolved.
