Sherrin traditionally supplies the official match ball for Australian rules football.
Sherrin is an Australian sporting-goods brand best known for its oval Australian footballs. The company was established by Thomas William Sherrin in Melbourne in 1880, and its name became closely associated with the ball used in elite Australian football competitions. The distinctive oval shape supports kicking, marking and bouncing on large grass grounds.
The AFL has used Sherrin footballs as its match balls, including balls marked for particular competitions and events. Balls can differ in size and branding depending on the level and format, but the Sherrin name remains strongly linked with the sport.
Sherrin should not be confused with brands more closely associated with other football codes. Gilbert is prominent in rugby, while Spalding is associated with basketball and other sports. The word “Sherrin” is therefore a specific brand answer, not the generic name of the ball.
