Lemonade is the Beyoncé album built around a six-part story of infidelity, heritage, and Black identity.
Released in 2016, Lemonade is Beyoncé’s sixth studio album and her second visual album. Its associated film premiered on HBO on April 23, 2016, alongside the album’s release. The project uses chapters named Intuition, Denial, Anger, Apathy, Emptiness, Accountability, Reform, Forgiveness, Hope, and Redemption.
Songs such as “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Daddy Lessons” connect personal experiences with broader subjects including race, family history, American history, and Black womanhood. The visual project draws on poetry by Warsan Shire and imagery from the American South.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 59th Grammy Awards. It won Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Film, while “Formation” won Best Music Video.
