Which Disney film did Beyoncé voice the character Nala in?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé voiced the adult Nala in Disney’s 2019 film The Lion King.

The film is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s 1994 traditionally animated movie. Jon Favreau directed the 2019 version, and Donald Glover voiced Simba. Beyoncé’s cast role as Nala connected her to a character who had been voiced by Moira Kelly in the original English-language film.

Beyoncé also contributed an original song, “Spirit,” to the film’s soundtrack. The song was nominated for awards and became part of the broader musical world surrounding the remake. The movie’s cast also included James Earl Jones, who returned as Mufasa.

The role led to a related project, The Lion King: The Gift, a 2019 album curated by Beyoncé. That album inspired Black Is King, a 2020 visual album and film. Nala’s role should not be confused with Beyoncé’s later voice role in the 2024 musical film Mufasa: The Lion King.
