Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé chronicles Beyoncé’s 2018 headline performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Netflix released the documentary on April 17, 2019.
The film combines concert footage with behind-the-scenes preparation, rehearsal scenes, and commentary about the performance’s artistic and cultural aims. Beyoncé’s Coachella appearance was widely called “Beychella” and featured a large ensemble of musicians, dancers, and performers.
Her set drew heavily on historically Black college and university marching-band traditions, including brass arrangements, drumlines, step routines, and majorette-inspired choreography. The performance also reunited her with former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
Homecoming is sometimes confused with Black Is King, Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album film connected to The Lion King: The Gift. They are separate projects. Homecoming focuses on the Coachella production and its preparation, while Black Is King presents a different visual narrative and musical setting.
