Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album exploring race, womanhood, and family is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, alongside a one-hour film broadcast on HBO. The project combines music, poetry, spoken-word passages, and visual chapters to create a unified narrative rather than a conventional collection of unrelated videos.
Its songs address betrayal, anger, grief, forgiveness, heritage, and reconciliation. The project also draws on Black Southern culture and imagery, giving its personal themes a wider historical and communal setting.
Lemonade became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards and won Best Urban Contemporary Album. A frequent misunderstanding is calling every Beyoncé visual album Lemonade; Black Is King and Beyoncé’s self-titled 2013 release are separate projects.
