The Australian rules football position responsible for contesting centre bounces is the ruckman.
Ruckmen are usually among the tallest players on the field. Their primary task is to leap and tap the ball during centre bounces and boundary throw-ins, directing possession toward teammates known as rovers or midfielders.
The position demands more than height. A successful ruckman needs timing, body positioning, endurance and the ability to contribute around the ground after the initial contest. Modern ruckmen commonly take marks, dispose of the ball and provide defensive pressure.
The term can describe a player of any gender, although “ruckwoman” is also used in women’s football. The position is distinct from a full-forward, whose main role is to create and convert scoring opportunities near goal.
