Which Australian rules football club won the 2018 AFL premiership after finishing the home-and-away season second?

The story behind the answer

The West Coast Eagles won the 2018 AFL premiership after finishing the home-and-away season second.

West Coast defeated Collingwood by five points in the 2018 Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Eagles finished the regular season behind Richmond, then won three finals to claim the premiership.

The match was decided late when West Coast forward Dom Sheed kicked a goal from outside 50 metres. Sheed’s kick put the Eagles ahead during the final quarter and became the signature moment of the game.

West Coast’s victory was the club’s fourth premiership and its first since 2006. Luke Shuey won the Norm Smith Medal, while captain Shannon Hurn lifted the premiership cup after a closely contested match.
