Which Australian rules football club is nicknamed the Swans?

The story behind the answer

The Australian rules football club nicknamed the Swans is the Sydney Swans.

The Sydney Swans are based in Sydney, New South Wales, and compete in the Australian Football League. Their nickname comes from the club’s earlier identity as South Melbourne. South Melbourne adopted the “Swans” nickname partly because of the large number of Western Australian players in its team, and the name remained after the club moved to Sydney.

The relocation occurred before the 1982 VFL season, making South Melbourne the first VFL club to move interstate. The club became known as the Sydney Swans in 1983. It later won the 2005 AFL premiership, its first since the South Melbourne club’s 1933 VFL premiership, and won another flag in 2012.

The Swans should not be confused with the Sydney-based GWS Giants, who entered the AFL in 2012. Sydney and Greater Western Sydney are separate clubs and share the city’s modern rivalry, known as the Sydney Derby.
