Which Australian rules football award is named after legendary forward John Coleman?

The story behind the answer

The Coleman Medal is the Australian rules football award named after legendary forward John Coleman.

The medal is presented to the AFL player who kicks the most goals during the home-and-away season. It honours John Coleman, the outstanding Essendon full-forward whose career was cut short by a knee injury.

Coleman played 98 VFL matches from 1949 to 1954 and kicked 537 goals, an extraordinary average of more than five goals per game. He won the VFL leading goalkicker award in each of his first five seasons.

The award was introduced in 1981. Earlier leading goalkickers are recognised in historical records, but the Coleman Medal itself applies to the modern award era. Finals goals are not included in the home-and-away tally used to decide the medal.
