Which athlete won the men's 90-metre ski-jump gold medal at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Matti Nykänen won the men’s 90-metre ski-jump gold medal at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics.

The Finnish jumper won with a total of 231.5 points, ahead of East Germany’s Jens Weißflog and Finland’s Jari Puikkonen. Nykänen’s victory was his first Olympic gold medal and established him as one of the leading ski jumpers of the era.

Sarajevo held two individual ski-jumping competitions: the normal hill and the large hill. Nykänen later won the large-hill event at the 1988 Calgary Games, where he became the first ski jumper to win three gold medals at one Olympics.

The event is sometimes described as the “normal hill” competition rather than the 90-metre event. The hill’s K-point was approximately 90 metres, which explains the older event wording.
