Mark English won the men’s 800 metres at the 2026 European Athletics Championships.
The Irish athlete won the final in 1:45.26 at Alexander Stadium. Croatia’s Marino Bloudek finished second in 1:45.62, while Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui took bronze in 1:45.71.
English’s victory was historically important for Ireland. It made him the first Irishman to win an individual gold medal at the European Athletics Championships. He had previously collected major-championship silver and bronze medals but had not won an individual European title.
The 800-metre race was decided by tactical positioning as well as speed. Unlike a sprint, athletes must manage pace, traffic and the final straight, making the event one of the championship’s most strategically demanding races.
