Audrey Werro set the championship record while winning the women’s 800 metres at Birmingham 2026.
The Swiss athlete won in 1:54.81, finishing ahead of Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson, who ran 1:55.01. The Netherlands’ Femke Broeders-Bol took bronze in 1:55.54, which was also recorded as a national record.
An 800-metre race consists of two laps on a standard outdoor track. It demands a combination of sprint speed and tactical endurance, and the final can be decided by positioning as much as by raw pace. Werro’s time broke the existing European Championships mark for the event.
Hodgkinson is the most likely source of confusion because she was the runner-up and a major name in the race. Werro, however, was the athlete who won gold and established the championship record.
