Eddie Eagan is the only athlete to win Olympic gold medals in both Summer and Winter Games sports.
Eagan won the light-heavyweight boxing title at the 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympics. Twelve years later, he became part of the United States four-man bobsleigh team that won gold at the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.
His achievement is unusual because boxing and bobsleigh require entirely different skills and competition pathways. Eagan had already practiced law and served in the U.S. Army before joining the bobsleigh team.
The feat is sometimes confused with athletes who competed in both Summer and Winter Olympics without winning in both. Eagan remains the unique gold-medal example. The modern Olympic program has expanded considerably, but no other athlete has matched his combination of a Summer boxing title and a Winter bobsleigh title.
