Which athlete holds the record for the most Winter Olympic gold medals?
Answer
Marit Bjørgen
Answer
Marit Bjørgen
Marit Bjørgen holds the record for the most Winter Olympic gold medals, with eight.
The Norwegian cross-country skier won eight Olympic gold medals across four Winter Games from 2002 through 2018. She also earned four silver and three bronze medals, giving her 15 Olympic medals overall, the highest total by any Winter Olympian.
Bjørgen's victories covered sprint, distance, relay, and team events. Her most successful Olympics were Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014, and Pyeongchang 2018, where she added multiple medals to an already historic career. She competed at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games as well.
The record is sometimes confused with the record for total Winter Olympic medals, which Bjørgen also holds. Biathlete Ole Einar Bjørndalen was the previous overall leader, with 13 medals, before Bjørgen surpassed that mark in 2018.
