Which American girl group released “Be My Baby” in 1963?
Answer
The Ronettes
Answer
The Ronettes
American girl group the Ronettes released “Be My Baby” in 1963.
Released in August 1963, “Be My Baby” became the Ronettes’ signature song and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The recording was produced by Phil Spector, who used his Wall of Sound technique to create a dense, orchestral pop arrangement. The famous opening drum pattern was played by Hal Blaine.
The Ronettes’ classic lineup featured Veronica Bennett, her sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley. Veronica, later known as Ronnie Spector, sang the lead vocal. The song’s dramatic production and romantic lyric helped make it one of the defining recordings of the early 1960s girl-group era.
“Be My Baby” is often confused with Phil Spector productions by the Crystals, especially “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Then He Kissed Me.” Those songs belong to a different group. The Ronettes also recorded “Baby, I Love You” and “Walking in the Rain.”
