Answer
The Shangri-Las
Answer
The Shangri-Las
The Shangri-Las recorded the 1964 single “Leader of the Pack.” The New York group released the song on Red Bird Records, and it became their signature recording.
“Leader of the Pack” tells a dramatic story about a teenage girl whose relationship ends after her parents disapprove of her boyfriend. Producer George “Shadow” Morton used spoken narration, sound effects, and a motorcycle-engine sound to heighten the record’s theatrical quality.
The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1964. The group consisted of sisters Mary Ann and Marge Ganser and sisters Mary Weiss and Betty Weiss. It is sometimes confused with the Shangri-Las’ other well-known hit, “Remember (Walking in the Sand),” which came earlier in 1964 and reached number five in the United States.
