Which American girl group recorded the 1964 hit “Baby Love”?

The story behind the answer

The Supremes recorded the 1964 hit “Baby Love.”

Written and produced by the Motown team Holland–Dozier–Holland, “Baby Love” became one of The Supremes’ signature songs. Diana Ross sings the lead vocal, with Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard contributing backing vocals. The recording features the polished, highly arranged pop-soul sound that helped Motown reach a broad international audience.

“Baby Love” topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and became The Supremes’ second consecutive US number-one single after “Where Did Our Love Go.” It also reached number one in the United Kingdom, making the group one of the first American Motown acts to achieve such major UK success.

The song is sometimes confused with later Supremes hits such as “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “You Can’t Hurry Love.” Those songs were also written by Holland–Dozier–Holland, but “Baby Love” specifically belongs to the group’s 1964 breakthrough period.
